As an Army officer, I was placed into leadership positions before I had the skills I needed to lead well. Like many in healthcare, I learned through trial and error, often in high-stakes environments where the consequences were real.

Over the next 25 years, I learned how to become a self-aware, trust-building leader who thrived when developing others. That learning did not come from training programs. It came from experience, reflection, and, at times, failure.

I know the cost of not having those skills early. I saw these costs play out in the military and in medicine. Talented, committed leaders tried to navigate complexity without the tools to build trust, handle conflict, or repair relationships. This resulted in imposter phenomenon, burnout, and even learned helplessness.
